چکیده

We propose the use of electrical stimulation to generate a new sensorial input to the human body to improve the man-machine interfacing, increasing the communication channels between a robot and the human body. This study focus on the sensation generation for a electromyographic (EMG) prosthetic hand, where the need of “biofeedback” is of vital importance to achieve subconscious control. We use electrical stimulation as a substitute for tactile feedback. The study shows the importance in the relationship between the intentionality from the user and the feedback provided to the body. This relationship allows the brain to correlate the information in one single event. We used an fMRI device to measure the activation of the brain related to the motor and somatosensory areas to confirm the sensation generation on the brain Index Terms – Biofeedback, electrical stimulation, man-machine interfaces ,fMRI..

Apparent Moving Sensation Recognition in Prosthetic Applications

Recent years have seen considerable improvements in state-of-the-art prosthetic devices. Research has recently shifted towards roviding sensory information feedback to users of such prostheses. Sensory information is necessary for the seamless integration f these devices with the human body. In this study we look at the possibility to use the “apparent moving sensation” effect as means of trans...

Brain responses to acupuncture stimulation in the prosthetic hand of an amputee patient.

This report describes the brain responses to acupuncture in an upper limb amputee patient. A 62-year-old male had previously undergone a lower left arm amputation following an electrical accident. Using functional MRI, we investigated brain responses to acupuncture stimulation in the aforementioned amputee under three conditions: (a) intact hand, (b) prosthetic hand (used by the patient), and (...

Stochastic facilitation of artificial tactile sensation in primates.

Artificial sensation via electrical or optical stimulation of brain sensory areas offers a promising treatment for sensory deficits. For a brain-machine-brain interface, such artificial sensation conveys feedback signals from a sensorized prosthetic limb. The ways neural tissue can be stimulated to evoke artificial sensation and the parameter space of such stimulation, however, remain largely u...

Electro-tactile Feedback System for a Prosthetic Hand

Without the sense of touch, amputees with prosthetic hands can have difficulty holding and manipulating objects, especially when a task requires some degree of skill and tactile feedback to perform. To equip prosthetic hand users with touch sensing and tactile feedback, researchers have been experimenting with various types of force and/or tactile sensors together with various methods for deliv...

Sensory feedback for body awareness in prosthetic applications

Every time we perform an action, our brain receives a large amount of sensory information about both the environment and our own bodies. All this information is used to continuously update our model of the world and act accordingly. Sensory-motor coordination—literally the coordination of our sensory and motor systems—allows us to create a mental representation of our own bodies. When this coor...
